2020-03-10 Western Branch vs Centreville Boys Class 6 Semifinal

On March 12th, two days before the Class 6 Basketball Chmapionship Final, Virginia Governor Raplh Northam declared a state of emergency in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. The VHSL then decided after the Class 2 Boys and the Class 2 Girls Championships were played to cancel the remainder of the The VHSL opted to enshrine both teams reaching the final game as co-champions in 5 of the 6 classes. John Marshall defeated Gate City for the Class 2 Boys State Championships. Gate City defeated Luray for the Class 2 Girls Championship, which were played before the VHSL made the decision to cancel the remaining games.

For the Centreville Wildcats it was a ride worth the wait. They knocked out Western Branch 62-55 on 3/10 in the semifinal of the Virginia Class 6 Boys Basketball Championship, winning their last 12 games of the season. That game would be the last of the season as concerns of the COVID-19 (Corona Virus) have shutdown professional, collegiate and now high school sports through out the United States.

In the 1st quarter the Wildcats would amass 13 points; 4 points each from Nick Anderson and Lance Douglas while holding Western Branch to 13. Western Branch was led by Bobby Johnson's 4 points.

In the 2nd quarter Centreville increased their lead to 9 points by quarters end to take a 32-23 halftime advantage. John Hunter hit a pair of 3 point baskets ,for 6 points while Avery Ford added 5 points and Mekhai Washington made all 4 of his free throw attempts. Cameron Edmonds led the Bruins wih 8 points, while Bobby Johnson added 5 points.

In the 3rd quarter the Bruins were able to hold the Wildcats to eight points, while scoring 11 points. Myles Evans paced the Bruins with 5 points while Cameron Edmonds added 4. Avery Ford scored 5 of the Wildcats eight points. Centrevile's lead was 40-34 with a quarter to play.

The 4th quarter saw Centreville and Western Branch combine for 43 points with Centreville edging the Bruins out 22-21 in the quarter and winning the semifinal 62-55 and to advance to the next game only to have that moment of playing for the championship taken away because of a pandemic that had spread around the globe.

Centreville (21-6) was led by John Hunter who scored 19 points including 4 three point baskets and 5-6 from the charity stripe. Avery Ford scored 17 for the game and tallied 20 rebounds. Mekhai Washington and Lance Douglas each scored 10 points. Washington would also add 12 rebounds for the Wildcats. Centreville and South County HS shared the Class 6 Boys Championship, while the Girl’s Class 6, was shared by Edison and Madison. Western Branch ends their season (20-6). The Bruins were led by Bobby Johnson's 15 points. Cameron Edmonds also added 10 points for the Bruins.
